Preventing Residential Fires
• Whether owning or renting, make sure your home’s wiring and electrical outlets are up to code. Make sure materials, especially roofing, are as fire resistant as possible. Make sure windows and doors are easily opened in case of fire in order to escape.

• Make sure there isn’t any vegetation such as weeds, plants, and trees that can catch fire. This means making sure there are not dead or easily combustible plants against the side of your home. Make sure there are no branches, especially dead ones, near your chimney (nothing within 10 feet is a good rule). Make sure your gutters are clean, especially since dead leaves or tree needles can catch fire easily.

• Trim back any tree limbs that are within 10 feet of your chimney and dead limbs overhanging your home to prevent them from catching fire.

• Make sure you have screens over chimneys and attic and other vents (about ˝ inch or smaller) Screens on chimneys prevent sparks from escaping. Screens over attic and other vents prevents sparks from entering.

• Never store combustible items like old rags or newspapers inside where they can catch fire. Never store anything against the side of your home that can catch fire, including firewood.
