Personal Safety: Preventing poisoning in your home

There are any number of substances in the typical home that contain poisons or are poisonous in themselves. This can include household cleaning products to medications to plants. Make sure everyone in your home, including pets are safe by following these suggestions:

• Make sure all medications have child-proof caps and are kept out of the reach of children. Pets are known to chew off caps or through plastic medication bottles, poisoning themselves or giving children access. Pets and children can also chew through individual pill

packets often used by over the counter medications. • Make sure all household cleaning products are out the reach of children. This should include installing special locks for drawers and cabinet doors.

Never transfer dangerous medications and poisonous products into other containers. Even if labeled, labels can and will fall or wear off.

• Make sure your children understand what the poison symbol stands for. If necessary, add poison symbol stickers to dangerous items.

• Make sure you are alert and paying attention when giving yourself or your children medication and never in a poorly lit environment. Make sure that your children understand medication is not candy or juice, especially if the medication is flavored or sweetened. (This includes children’s vitamins!) • Never keep outdated medications and dispose of them properly.

• Follow all safety directions, including the use of proper equipment, when dealing with products that produce harmful fumes or vapors.

• Make sure the use of such substances are in well ventilated areas.

• Never work with products that produce dangerous fumes or vapors around children or pets. Make sure children understand that such products are not to be touched, moved, or played with.
